On this day in 1889, the Oregonian reported: "The balloon ascension made today by Professor P.H. Redmon from near the east approach of the Jefferson Street Ferry was one of the most satisfactory ever witnessed in the Portland area. After the ropes were loosened, the balloon went up like a shot until it had reached the altitude of 1,500 feet, when it began to ascend more slowly. The airship having reached a height of nearly 2,000 feet, the Professor adjusted his parachute and jumped. During the descent he performed many dazzling acrobatic feats and his thrilling maneuvers, such as hanging by his toes, were much applauded by the 3,000 spectators."
