On this day in 1903, after 5 months of heated debate and extensive discussion, the Grants Pass City Council voted not to accept a $10,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie for construction of a new library. Only two council members supported the proposal. The council's action greatly displeased the Grants Pass Women's Club who were responsible for initially securing the offer from Carnegie, and prompted the rumor that the club may forget its ban on political activity and work toward the removal of certain councilmen at the next election.
