On this day in 1850 Oregon's fourth newspaper, The Western Star, made its appearance in Milwaukie. Published by Lot Whitcomb, founder of Milwaukie, and boat builder who launched the first steamer built on the Willamette River a month later, this weekly served primarily as a promotional piece for Whitcomb's new town. In the late spring of 1851, Whitcomb sold the newspaper to his publication staff who surreptitiously moved the publication to Portland and brought it out as The Oregon Weekly Times.
