On this day in 1830 Joseph Buchtel, an early daguerrian artist and pioneer Portland photographer, was born. Buchtel arrived in Portland in 1852. By 1885 he was established as Portland's only photographer and also served as Multnomah County Sheriff. In 1866 he organized "Stumptown's" first baseball team, playing as pitcher/captain. By 1884 he had taken more than 25,000 negatives, much "A treasure of art, biography, history and social life" of Oregon. Unfortunately, most of Buchtel's collection was carelessly destroyed while the photographer was abroad.
