On this day in 1883, the long-awaited realization of a rail connection between Oregon and the eastern United States came to pass when the "last spike" was driven in the remaining gap between the O.R. & N. Railroad extending to the east from Portland and the Oregon shortline which was laid westward from the Union Pacific. The ceremonious occasion occurred in Huntington and marked the end of a long, troublesome and dangerous building project. The stretch between Bonneville and The Dalles overcame more difficulties in construction, according to the railroad men, than any comparable length of track anywhere else in the United States.
