On this day in 1852 citizens assembled at Longview, Washington, declared their independence from the Oregon Territory. Washington gained official territorial status the following year and boundaries were established as all that area south of the 49th degree of latitude crosses the river near Fort Walla Walla, thence to the summit of the Rocky Mountains western Montana and the Idaho panhandle were later eliminated from the Washington area.
