In the spring of 1875, Peter Britt installed a rain gauge on his premises in Jacksonville. The December 3, 1875 edition of The Democratic Times reported: "Peter Britt informs us that the rainfall from October 17th to December 1st has been 19 inches. This is the first time since 1862 that so large an amount of rain has fallen this early in the season. All the streams are up, some of them very high, while every creek, gulch, etc. has more or less water in it."
