On this day in 1850 the first issue of the Portland Oregonian hit newsstands. Distribution was both local and as far south as Marysville (Corvallis). Founders of the new weekly newspaper were William W. Chapman and Stephen Coffin who secured the services of Thomas Dryer as editor. Both Dryer and his sparse printing equipment were brought from San Francisco by boat. The newspaper became a daily in 1861 and on this day in 1881, the first Sunday Oregonian was issued. Under the editorial guidance of Harvey Scott between 1865 and 1910, the Oregonian achieved and maintained prominence as a first class newspaper.
