On this day in 1853 the Oregon Statesman published an item indicating tree worms in Oregon forests were more than a match for rifle balls they encountered: "Curious--Mr. Carson of Clakamas County left upon our table a couple of rifle balls which were cut out of a fir tree, into which they had been fired. Through the center of one of them are two neatly cut holes, made by worms. The other has a similar grazing on the edge. The insect in gnawing into the tree, met the leaden bullet, and, instead of turning aside, went through it."
