Tillamook On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1853, Clatsop and Yamhill Counties were cut into by the Territorial Legislature, producing the new county of Tillamook. In the original bill, it was spelled "Tilemookz" which was subsequently altered to "Tilamook" and finally to Tillamook.

Confusion over the correct spelling and pronunciation was attributed to the spelling variations of the Indian tribe in the area for which the county was named: Killamook, Kallemex, Killamuck, Tillamook, etc. Selecting the county seat was postponed until the population increased beyond the eighty settlers who resided within the new boundaries.
