On this day in 1844 Oregon City became the first incorporated town on the Pacific coast. Oregon City was also the only town in Oregon to hold a Charter under the Oregon Provisional Government. Known as Willamette Falls when it was settled in 1829, this historic site was also the first capital of organized government in the west, as well as host to the first Protestant Church, first Masonic Lodge, and the first newspaper west of the Missouri River. In 1864, Oregon City's industrial life was born with the opening of a woolen mill, and two years later, the first paper mill on the west coast was constructed.
