On this day in 1897 the eastern Oregon cattle baron Pete French was shot down and killed by Ed Oliver during a lengthy and bitter land dispute with small ranchers in the area. After the shooting, one of French's cowhands, David Crow, jumped on a horse and rode south to Winnemucca, Nevada...a distance of 200 miles in 48 hours. Crow changed mounts nine times. After delivering the news to Winnemucca, he rode to Red Bluff, California to tell Mrs. French she was a widow.
