On this day in 1890, the long-awaited bout of fisticuffs between Dave Campbell of Portland and Larry Sullivan, the sailors' boarding house keeper from Astoria, took place. The crowd of 1500 witnessed a short-lived glove contest in Portland's Mechanic Pavilion as Sullivan got knocked out in the third round by the home town fireboy. Sullivan had waited four years for his chance to box Campbell, "...though he suffered a waterloo, he acted the little giant, showing plenty of sand."
