Oregon Capitol Burns On This Day In Oregon

On this day in 1855 fire struck the nearly completed Oregon Capitol building and totally destroyed it. It was suspected that arson was the cause, probably the work of "some Corvallis malcontent still smarting over the return of the seat of government to Salem."

The territorial library's archives and journals were consumed in the conflagration as were the laws and papers of the current session in the House and Senate chambers.

The Oregon Capitol was destroyed again in April 25, 1935 by a fire that started in the basement.
